Welcome to my blog

If you enjoy finding a lot of different outlets for your creativity, then we may just be kindred spirits.
This blog is an outlet for my interest in miniatures, crochet, plastic canvas, and many other various arts and crafts.

I also love walking, taking digital photos, and most recently, have rediscovered an old love...bike riding! I purchased an amazing new bike, a comfy Townie by Electra this summer, and have been having a grand time exploring the area as though for the first time. It's like being a kid again!

If you enjoy any of these things too, pour a cup of coffee and tea, sit down, and join me.

Take care!

Miniature Gift Bag Room Box

Gift Bag Room Box
I made this gift bag room box for my Uncle Buck's 85th birthday, yesterday.  It took me over 7 hours of non stop work but I had a blast making it and only wish I would have thought of making it earlier so I would have had more time to work on it.
Room box in a gift bag
I cut a window out of the gift bag and added some bias tape around the edges.  I wanted to use ribbon but my Mom put my box of ribbons somewhere and I can't find them.
I made the interior walls, roof, and floor out of foam core, left over from my bake shop.  The wall paper and flooring is contact paper, from the dollar store.
I resized a photo of my uncle Buck and his late wife, Cobie, for the wall, and used scotch tape to attach it to a piece of wood.  The tape kind of looks like glass in real life.

Buck wanted cake, pizza, and KFC, so I recreated that in mini, using polymer clay.  I made the cake big because the real cake was huge, big enough to serve 20 people with lots of left overs.  I also put in a cheese and cracker tray with a bowl of olives, and some bead vases.  The pizza box and chicken bucket are printies.
My uncle loves Frank Sinatra and has all of his albums so I rezised an album cover and printed it out, and glued on a backing so it's like an envelope.  I even cut out a little disc to put inside but didn't have time to paint it black.
The furniture was from the dollar tree.  I wish I would have had time to paint it.
Uncle Buck really loved his gift, and so did everyone else.
I will definitely make another one one day.

More Mini Cheese Boards, lol

These things are addictive!
Miniature cheese boards in 1:12 scale
I had to make another cheese board so my smoked Swiss cheese would have somewhere to go. I tried a brown marble this time, and made it curved on one end, with a hole for hanging it up when empty. Considering the cheeses and crackers are stuck on with liquid sculpey, that will never happen.

I also made a little bowl of olives, and some olives. I tried black, green, and Kalamata olives.  The bowl was super easy to make; I just rolled a small ball of clay and used a large dotting tool to make the indentation for the inside.

I made some apples...or tried to, lol.  I added them to the big cheese board, along with a slice of smoked Swiss cheese.  Other than that, this board is the same as it was yesterday; I just glued everything in place with liquid Sculpey today.

I misplaced my penny so I put a bun in with the cheeseboards, to show scale. It's quite a small hotdog bun so I took another photo, with my finger, to show scale.

I had a blast and would love to make even more of these, with some salami next time, lol.
Why are minis soooo very addictive?

Miniature Pies

More pies, lol.  I get hungry making these polymer clay desserts for some reason.  I made the apple and lemon pies today, and the blueberry and pie crusts yesterday.
Mini pies for the dollhouse bake shop

The Apple pie is my favorite; I used new techniques that I learned from watching SugarCharmShop's tutorial
Polymer clay mini lemon meringue pie
The lemon came out OK but my yellow is too yellow-y.  I tried making it lighter by mixing it with white polymer clay but it gave it a green tinge so I used it as is.  The meringue is white polymer clay mixed with liquid sculpey.  I mixed a bit of yellow polymer clay with liquid sculpey to get the goopy lemon look on the bottom of the pan.  I have to tint the edges of the meringue golden brown later; not sure what paint I should use on baked clay.

Sadie is very happy with her pies, but she's rather a messy eater.  She spilled pie filling on the table ;-).

Polymer clay and crochet doll

I'm so far behind on my blog; sorry.  I've been sick a lot with my asthma and various flu bugs, but have managed to do some crafting.  OK; a lot of crafting, lol.  I was going to try to fit it all into one post but after realizing how very much I had to catch up on, decided I'd better do individual posts instead of one that would be scroll length ;-0.

I sculpted this dolls head out of polymer clay, and promptly forgot all about her (if I put things away I forget they exist; it drives my very organized Mom crazy that I need things out where I can see them).  I found the head awhile ago, and decided she needed a body, but I wasn't in the mood to sculpt one.  I love all of my crafts, but my favorite is crochet because I find it relaxing.  Plastic canvas is relaxing too, but crochet puts me in a zen state so I decided to crochet her a body.  I wanted to do a silly outfit for her, so I did.

Baby house elf in polymer clay

I haven't sculpted for awhile so I thought I'd try my hand at something tiny and whimsical.  This baby house elf is about the size of a strawberry.

He's not as realistic as my other polymer clay sculpts; I wanted him to be more cartoony.
He has a wire armature connecting his head and torso, arms, and legs, and wow, was it a pain to sculpt over wire.

Here he is with my strawberry plants, in the bottom pot.  As you can see, he's about the size of the ripe red strawberry on top.

Sculpt 7, Pouty girl in polymer clay

OOAK baby girl in polymer clay
This is my latest attempt at sculpting, and my biggest baby doll yet (I still have to measure her).
OOAK baby girl, sculpey living baby
I wanted to make a pouty faced toddler and this is what I came up with.  I made her eyes by hand, and they're a pretty green, but I ended up covering most of the whites as I sculpted.
OOAK pouty baby
I made a scull for her first, out of tinfoil and polymer clay; baked it, added the eyes, baked it again so the eyes wouldn't move while I sculpted.  I think I'll do it again this way as it's the only way I can make sure the pupils are facing the same way, lol.
I ran out of the normal wire that I use to put loops in the limbs so they can be sewn to the body and the wire I used broke as soon as I pulled the sewing thread tight.  I had to saw off the end of all of the limbs and redo them.  I had to open another bar of clay, and even though I used the exact same brand and color, the  new clay was several shades darker so this poor baby has limbs that are darker on all of the ends.
OOAK baby girl
I tried adding a layer of clay to her head so I could root it and it was a huge disaster.  Not only did the hair look awful, the extra clay distorted her poor head, so I had to use a big wig to cover it up.
Thankfully, the wig does a great job of returning her head to normal proportions, especially after I trimmed it.  The wig suits her, too.  In my mind, she's about 2 years old.
Her feet are so cute; these have to be the best feet I've made yet.  I love her little round toes, lol.
Peek a boo!
Here she is showing off her discolored upper thighs while playing peek a boo, although her diaper (pull ups, lol!) and panties cover most of the worst of it.
I really am going to have to learn how to sew as I'd like to be able to make some nice doll bodies, and clothes, too.  I love crocheting but it would be nice to be able to make some cute little onesies for the dolls.
All in all, I'm very happy with the way this one turned out.  Now she  just needs a name.

Sculpt 6, Philip, a polymer clay baby boy

Polymer clay OOAK baby boy
Meet Philip, my little One of a kind polymer clay baby boy.

OOAK baby boy
Polymer clay OOAK sculpt
I made Philip today, out of Sculpey Living baby clay.  His eyes were hand made by me the other day.  They're not perfect but they're OK, I think.  I love the color.
He's wearing an outfit that belongs to my Blue tufted Elf, so I'll have to crochet something for him tomorrow.
His hair is soft blonde mohair.  The first layer was baked right into the clay and the rest was left loose, but I didn't like it so I glued the second layer down as well.

For some reason, I have an easier time doing the left hand and foot, and the left side of doll faces.  Maybe because I'm right handed?  I'll just have to keep practicing.  I don't know how the pros manage to sculpt an entire little doll in two hours...I tried to follow along with a DVD and must have watched it 10 times in total because I kept having to go back, lol.  It took me the entire day and evening to do this doll.

I really enjoy making these babies.  I'm going to have to make more eyes in this size.
