Welcome to my blog

If you enjoy finding a lot of different outlets for your creativity, then we may just be kindred spirits.
This blog is an outlet for my interest in miniatures, crochet, plastic canvas, and many other various arts and crafts.

I also love walking, taking digital photos, and most recently, have rediscovered an old love...bike riding! I purchased an amazing new bike, a comfy Townie by Electra this summer, and have been having a grand time exploring the area as though for the first time. It's like being a kid again!

If you enjoy any of these things too, pour a cup of coffee and tea, sit down, and join me.

Take care!
Kat

Cute Fox in the Forest, Artwork on Procreate

Cute Fox in the Forest, Today's Art on Procreate, #Tatyworks

I LOVE my Ipad and Procreate

Today I spent hours drawing/coloring this adorable fox in the forest.  I saw this tutorial by Tatyworks on Youtube a few months ago and really wanted to try it, but it was a 56 minute tutorial, and I figured that since half hour tutorials take me hours to finish, an hour long tutorial might take me days, but I got it done in one day (I am guessing it took about 3 hours?)  Nope...I just checked; my Ipad says it took me exactly 4 hours and 9 minutes to finish, lol.

Totally worth it, and I'm sure I'll get faster once I learn more. I have learned a lot already.  Procreate is much easier to learn than Clip Studio Paint.  Much more intuitive. Plus, all the good tutorials are done for Procreate and being able to follow tutorials along exactly the way they were made is amazing.

I love what I call Whitefish Island, but what is really called St. Mary's Island.

It's confusing because the Island is really made up of two separate Islands, connected by a bridge. You have to cross over one bridge to get to the first Island, which is called St. Mary's.  It's a lovely Island that has lots of trails and a boardwalk that meanders over a beaver pond. It loops over to the St. Mary's River and then back through the bush and fields one way, or to lovely butterfly fields the other way.  If you cross the second bridge, you end up on Whitefish Island, which loops around to the St. Mary's River and has a big boardwalk right along the rapids. It's quite lovely as well.

Depending on my energy levels and the time of day, I either walk both Islands or opt for just the St. Mary's Island.  In my mind, I call both Island's "Whitefish" because the trail along the is called Attikamek, which is Ojibway for Whitefish. Plus both Islands are in the Whitefish Channel of St. Mary' River.  It's a lovely trail, right in the middle of the city, and I love seeing the wildlife.

Chickadees are tame enough to eat out of your hand, as are chipmunks and squirrels. In the past, I've even had pigeons, a bluejay, and a woodpecker land on my hand and select peanuts or seeds.  I've seen as many as 15 beavers in the pond.

Cloud Forest Procreate Art on Ipad

Cloud Forest, Procreate #James Julier Art Tutorials

Cloud Forest

This digital painting was a lot of fun to paint, and used only 2 brushes...the soft air brush and 1 artistic brush that I think is called leather, that has some texture, which was used for the trees.

Beach Painting on Procreate/Ipad Pro

Beach, from a tutorial by Art with Flo, Ipad Pro, Procreate

I'm LOVING my new Ipad Pro & Procreate!

I saw this tutorial back in July, I think, and I tried it on my phone with my finger, lol.

Finger painting with Ibis paint on phone

It came out OK, for a finger painting, lol, but I couldn't wait to try it on an Ipad. I'm so glad that I got it, even though I'm a bit mad at myself for messing around with cheaper art tablets first, instead of just getting an Ipad in the first place.  I was trying to save money but in the long run spent more than I would have had I just gotten the ipad in the first place.

Oh well, live and learn.

It is so much easier to follow tutorials on the Ipad with Procreate.  It's a joy to learn on the Ipad, that's for sure.

There are so many other tutorials that I want to try. My plan is to do so many tutorials that I can eventually absorb the knowledge of how to paint and use the program enough that I can do my own artwork, by myself.  I'm not there yet though, lol.

Dramatic sunset in Procreate, # James Julier Art Tutorials

I LOVE my new Ipad Pro and I LOVE Procreate!  It is so much easier than using my Veikk and Clip Studio Paint.

This is my second try on Procreate. I followed this tutorial on Youtube, by James Julier Art Tutorials: Dramatic Sunset

I am already learning so much, and I'm planning to do a LOT of art, lol.

First Try with Ipad Pro and Procreate, autumn sunrise painting, tutorial by Art With Flo

My first Procreate art

So I am so pleased with my new Ipad Pro and Procreate. I was finally able to follow a procreate tutorial while actually using Procreate.

I didn't have to try to find similar brushes on Clip Studio, and I didn't have to figure out how to do things on my Veikk that needed to be done on Procreate.

My brain doesn't hurt anymore, lol. I can actually follow tutorials properly now.

This first work was pretty simple, but I chose it so that I could get something done while learning something new.

I' happy with the results, and super happy with procreate and the ipad pro.

It's late and I need to go to bed. I've just spent HOURS trying to catch up my blog regarding everything I did in the last 20 days...18 of them were spent out at my camp, where I had no internet.

I'm all caught up now, thank God, lol.

I Got an Ipad Pro, 12.9 inches, generation 4 (2020)

I Bought an Ipad Pro, 12.9 inch display, Generation 4, 2020.

My Brand New Ipad Pro,

My brand new Ipad Pro.

So, I had planned on waiting until Christmas, but Best Buy was having a huge Labor Day sale.  $280 dollars off of this Ipad Pro.

OK, so it's not the latest, greatest 2021 Ipad.  I really wanted that, of course, but I couldn't justify paying $400 more for it.  I''m still a beginner at digital art.  I don't need the latest and greatest, even though I may want it.

The new one wasn't on sale.  Plus, there will be a NEW new one out in spring.  There's no way I can keep up with the latest.

This 2020 model fit my budget.  It didn't break the bank.  And I LOVE it.

The 12.9 inch screen is HUGE, but the thing is surprisingly thin and light.  I asked the kid at Bestbuy to put a screen protector on it for me, and he did. So I don't have to worry about scratching the screen.

I ordered a sleeve for it on Amazon today, and it should arrive by Sept. 10th.  In the meantime, I'll just have to be super careful, and store the Ipad Pro in the box it came in.

I am super excited!  Almost all of the Youtube tutorials that I follow, and want to follow, are done for Procreate on the Ipad, and it's very hard to follow along without an Ipad or Procreate.

So the first thing I did when I got home and booted this thing up, was buy Procreate!

Woohoo!

Sunrise Painting with Clip Studio Paint and Veikk VK 1200 Tablet

My painting, following a tutorial by James Julier Art Tutorials, on my Veikk VK 1200 and Clip Studio Paint
While I was at camp, I did this digital painting. I wanted to do a sunrise over a lake because I'd seen so many in real life, and I wanted to learn how to paint waves.

I had fun, and I love my Veikk, but it is so frustrating that all of the good tutorials are about how to paint using procreate.  I had planned on buying myself an Ipad for Christmas so that I could use Procreate and follow the tutorials the way they're meant to be followed...but...

I came home to discover Best Buy was having a huge Labor Day Sale...and so...I thought hard about getting an Ipad.

My whole rationale for getting the cheaper Veikk tablet (under 200 dollars) was because I didn't want to spend the money on an expensive tablet if it turned out I didn't like digital art.

Well, as it turns out, I LOVE digital art, and have been doing a LOT of it.

Check out my art on Pinterest, here: My Digital Art

I have been busy.  So, I thought long and hard about getting an Ipad.  But I couldn't decide...

September 4, 2021, Goulais Bay Camp LIfe, 18th Day of Camping

Day 18, Last Day of Camp Getaway

Big bird caught a fish

I was sitting down at the bay waiting for sunrise and a big bird dived into the lake and caught a fish!  I couldn't believe it!  How cool is that?  It was still too dark to make out what kind of bird it is, but you can see the big wingspan, and the fish carried in the bird's claws.

Big bird flying away with catch

Here you can see the bird flying away with his or her catch!

Too cloudy for sunrise

It was so cloudy  I couldn't watch the sunrise at all.  It was a rainy day.

So instead, lets look at some photos that help us say goodbye to camp for the season:

These are the benches I sit on every morning to watch the sunrise.  Goodbye benches.

I sat on these benches every day at sunrise, and every day at moonrise.  The view faces East, and I was so lucky to get to see the sun and moon rise, and to have the full moon light up the sky for the first week.

My Dad built the benches, firepit, patio, deck, camp, outhouse, shower room, tool room...everything, and my Mom helped.  Somewhere in the concrete are little palm prints belonging to my brother and me, when we were very little.  This place has deep meaning for me.

Little Yellow Camp on a hill.

Goodbye, my little yellow camp on a hill. I'll miss you.  I'll still go for rides and spend a day here or there, but the camp is not winterized so it's too hard to spend the night once the weather is colder.  I had 18 glorious days and I'm grateful for each one.

Hunter, a Very Good Boy

Last but not least, goodbye Hunter. Thank you for spending 18 days with me. I'll miss you so much. My neighbor's are so lucky to have such a sweet doggo, and I'm so grateful that they don't mind that he spends so much time with me when I'm out there.

Alright, 18 days of camp life posted in one day.  I don't have internet at my camp and now that I'm back home I wanted to blog about it before I start forgetting.

Thank you for spending time at camp with me, readers. I hope you enjoyed it too.

 BEST Sunrise EVER

BEST Sunrise ever, Goulais Bay ON, Sept 3/21

This was supposed to be my last morning at camp, and I almost went back to sleep and missed this. I am so glad that I forced myself to get up and go outside.  Nature was putting on quite a show.

But...that was later.  It was still dark when I got up.

See how dark it was when I woke up?  So dark, but the sky was already turning orange, yellow, and red.
