Welcome to my blog

If you enjoy finding a lot of different outlets for your creativity, then we may just be kindred spirits.
This blog is an outlet for my interest in miniatures, crochet, plastic canvas, and many other various arts and crafts.

I also love walking, taking digital photos, and most recently, have rediscovered an old love...bike riding! I purchased an amazing new bike, a comfy Townie by Electra this summer, and have been having a grand time exploring the area as though for the first time. It's like being a kid again!

If you enjoy any of these things too, pour a cup of coffee and tea, sit down, and join me.

Take care!

Completion: Christmas Card Set/Diamond Painting

Diamond Painting Christmas Card Set

This was a fun set to do, and very easy.  The kit was lovely, as each card came with it's own individually packed set of diamond drills.  I'm new to Diamond Painting so this was a lovely way to start out.
I bought the set on Amazon.ca. For more info, watch the Youtube video (above).

Crochet Christmas 2021/ADORABLE Completion & Pattern Review

Christmas Ornaments 2021

This is a TERRIFIC pattern by Amy Gaines. So much fun to do.  I did the entire set, and also did a set of 4 penguins only. I forgot to take photos of the extra penguins and I gave them all away as gifts.

Crocheted Christmas Ornaments, Set of 3

Crocheted Christmas  Ornaments

Crocheted Christmas Ornaments 2021

I had so much fun making these cute little Christmas Ornaments.
I started with the penguin, using light grey and white, with a tiny bit of yellow for the beak. The eyes are embroidered on; French knots.
Next came little Santa, to look over Mr. Penguin
And finally, a Reindeer.

The pattern works very well, and I still have 2 more characters to make, a bear and a Yeti.  I'm still very slow at crocheting since I broke my finger and it healed up all crooked.  In the past I would have been able to make the whole set in a few hours.   Now it takes me maybe 4 or 5 times longer than it used to; it took me all day to make these three, and I just finished and it's almost 2 AM.

If you want to try the pattern, it's by Amy Gaines, and can be found on Etsy. Amiguri Christmas Crochet 2021

Today's Procreate Art, an Original by me, lol: Christmas Squirrel on an Icy Pond

Christmas Squirrel on an Icy Pond

Christmas Squirrel on an Icy Pond, digital art on Procreate by me, Kathy Schopp

I've been doing a lot of Procreate tutorials on youtube since mid September, and I decided to try something on my own today, using techniques I've learned.

I'm really happy with the way this came out.   I experimented with a lot of different brushes.  I did the trees with the fine nozzle spraypaint brush.  I used different texture brushes for the texture, and I used the Sable brush for the squirrels fur.  These brushes all came with procreate.  I only drew the tree once, and cut and pasted and warped and resized them, and also flipped them around so they were facing different directions.

I need to figure out how to crop the photo because I'd like to crop out some of the sky.  When I was drawing I made the canvas bigger and then forgot the top existed, lol.  I added clouds but would like to cut it out and make the painting end just above the tree line.

I used this photo of a squirrel for reference.  I had it open on my computer to look at while I drew on my Ipad.  I know there's a way to use reference photos on the ipad but I forgot how, lol.

I greatly simplified the squirrel by drawing shapes...mostly ovals, for the head, body, and legs. I wanted mine standing up straighter than the image above so I just straightened his little back. I could have shaded the squirrel more but I didn't want it too realistic looking.  I'm very happy with the way it turned out.  I hope you like it too, and that it makes you smile.

Winter Scenery with Birds

Winter Scenery with Birds

I really enjoyed doing this tutorial by Tatiana from Tatyworks on Youtube. It took me 4 hours and 16 minutes to do the original painting in green, white, and black, and then another half hour or so to play around with the color balance to get this color, which I like a lot better.
Winter Scenery original colors

I think I like stylized art the best; it sort of reminds me of storybooks i used to read as a child.  Like a cross between realism and fantasy?

I don't know, I just like it, lol.

This was a very challenging tutorial for me, and I got frustrated at times...not with the drawing, that was fine, but with my memory.  You'd think I could remember something I listen to 5 seconds after hearing it, but no, i had to keep stopping and replaying every bit of the tutorial.
I keep forgetting how to use Procreate. I need to use it more frequently. I really let a lot of time go by between this painting/drawing and the last.  Oops.

There were supposed to be berries on the little bush that the bird is sitting on. I drew them but they disappeared when I merged the layers.  I didn't notice they were gone until just this second, lol.  I can add them back tomorrow; I'm too tired now, and also, I need to charge my Ipad.

Secret of Retropolis Part 2/Saving Jenny/SUPER Cool VR Point and Click A...

Today's Art, Northern Light's, Procreate

Northern Lights, Procreate, following a tutorial by James Julier

 Northern Lights on Procreate

I had a lot of fun painting these dancing sky lights on procreate. I was lucky enough to see real Northern Lights like these when I taught way up North in Moosonee ON, years ago.

This entire painting was done mostly using the airbrushes, except for one spot on the snow where I used a crayon brush.

If you want to try this, the tutorial by James Julier can be found here: Northern Lights

NEW 3D Models and AR in latest Procreate Update

3D shoes in AR, painted in Proceate, #Tatyworks

3D Models in Procreate 💖💕💔😍...with AR!

3D Procreate shoes in AR, sized up to fit me :-)
I am so thrilled with the new Procreate update that came out today!  We can now draw and paint on 3D models, and even look at them in VR. I painted these shoes thanks to an amazing tutorial by Tatyworks, and immediately tested the AR (Augmented Reality) feature.  In the first photo, I put the shoes on the bed and learned how to move them around.

In the second photo (above) I put them on the floor near the bedroom closet and learned how to resize them so they would fit my feet, lol. Or maybe be a bit too big.  They can be shrunk down to doll size or made big enough to fit an elephant, lol.  So cool!

I raced around the house like a crazy person, putting the shoes in various places (I won't bore you, but here's one I liked; the downstairs closet, with our other shoes. Just noticed we all like black, lol, so these REALLY stand out.

My Ipad with 3D model of shoes painted in Procreate, new AR feature

And here is what they look like on the Ipad..they're not really in the closet, even though the Ipad makes them look like they are. I took the photo of the Ipad with my phone, lol.  And now I'm blogging on my laptop so this blog is courtesy of a LOT of electronics.

I am really having a blast with this. I highly recommend the Ipad, the Apple Pencil 2, and Procreate, if you like art. It's amazing and the new update has so many more features that I haven't yet tried out.

Our Camp; My first Procreate Art without a Tutorial

My First Procreate Painting with No Tutorial

Our Camp, Procreate/Ipad Digital Art, no tutorial

I'm learning!  I had so much fun making this.  It's not perfect, but it's the best I can do so far, lol.  I made this painting/drawing/illustration (what are they called, lol) for my Dad.

This is our family cottage, which we call camp.  I sketched and then painted this based on a photo I took this summer while I was out there. I want to try to make it again a year from now to see if I've improved.

My Dad loves it; it was part of his 82nd birthday.

Cute Autumn Squirrel, Procreate Digital Art

Cute Autumn Squirrel, Procreate, Ipad, Digital Art, #Genevieve's Design Studio

I Love Procreate and my Ipad Pro!

I made this adorable illustration (a few days ago), following a tutorial by the talented Genevieve from Genevieve's Design Studio on Youtube.

I made some changes from the original  Since it's Autumn here in Canada, I changed the leaves to colorful maple leaves, instead of using green elm type leaves.  I also shortened the squirrels ear because we don't have long eared squirrels here, and I changed the mouth style and position. Other than that, I followed the tutorial exactly.

Happy Thanksgiving! Today's Art is Thanksgiving Themed.

Procreate Art, from tutorial by Tatyworks

Thanks to Tatiana from Tatyworks for this fun tutorial!  Today is Thanksgiving here in Canada so this is perfect.

I changed the tutorial a small bit...the only changes I made were to make the border red instead of white, and to add the words Happy Thanksgiving. I need to learn how to do calligraphy as my penmanship is awful, lol.

Cute Fox in the Forest, Artwork on Procreate

Cute Fox in the Forest, Today's Art on Procreate, #Tatyworks

I LOVE my Ipad and Procreate

Today I spent hours drawing/coloring this adorable fox in the forest.  I saw this tutorial by Tatyworks on Youtube a few months ago and really wanted to try it, but it was a 56 minute tutorial, and I figured that since half hour tutorials take me hours to finish, an hour long tutorial might take me days, but I got it done in one day (I am guessing it took about 3 hours?)  Nope...I just checked; my Ipad says it took me exactly 4 hours and 9 minutes to finish, lol.

Totally worth it, and I'm sure I'll get faster once I learn more. I have learned a lot already.  Procreate is much easier to learn than Clip Studio Paint.  Much more intuitive. Plus, all the good tutorials are done for Procreate and being able to follow tutorials along exactly the way they were made is amazing.

Walks on Whitefish Island/St. Mary's Island

I love what I call Whitefish Island, but what is really called St. Mary's Island.

It's confusing because the Island is really made up of two separate Islands, connected by a bridge. You have to cross over one bridge to get to the first Island, which is called St. Mary's.  It's a lovely Island that has lots of trails and a boardwalk that meanders over a beaver pond. It loops over to the St. Mary's River and then back through the bush and fields one way, or to lovely butterfly fields the other way.  If you cross the second bridge, you end up on Whitefish Island, which loops around to the St. Mary's River and has a big boardwalk right along the rapids. It's quite lovely as well.

Depending on my energy levels and the time of day, I either walk both Islands or opt for just the St. Mary's Island.  In my mind, I call both Island's "Whitefish" because the trail along the is called Attikamek, which is Ojibway for Whitefish. Plus both Islands are in the Whitefish Channel of St. Mary' River.  It's a lovely trail, right in the middle of the city, and I love seeing the wildlife.

Chickadees are tame enough to eat out of your hand, as are chipmunks and squirrels. In the past, I've even had pigeons, a bluejay, and a woodpecker land on my hand and select peanuts or seeds.  I've seen as many as 15 beavers in the pond.
